Remain Calm - You Are Not Alone
The economic disaster that almost wiped out Wall Street in 2008 has damaged the college generation a lot more then any other. The New York Times recently reported that many college graduates are finding it difficult at best to find a job. Walking around your local Wal-Mart is more depressing when you find that half the staff members hold degrees ranging from anthropology to mathematics. Most graduates can’t even get a job at Wal-Mart! So how can you beat the unemployment queue?

All is not lost and the market is not as depressing as the national and local media would have you believe. It is always easier to print bad news which is fun to write and read, but the truth that all journalists must face especially now, is that cynicism in no one’s ally. People talk themselves into recession. Sooner or later we will talk ourselves out of it too. A smart graduate is better placed to do this then anyone else. So what can you do?
Having your resume up to specification is the first step. You will have to alter it slightly depending on the jobs you go for and document management is key to this process. Buy yourself a good all-in-one printer. If you can’t afford one, get yourself a USB stick and make sure you can access the facilities at the public library. Effective management of all your applications and copies of your resume will prevent you from falling at the first hurdle.

The next thing you have to do is make sure you’re keeping busy when not working. Employers are looking more and more for that point of difference on the resume. Instead of sitting at home lamenting your lot in life, get outside and indulge in some community work. This costs nothing and can not only enhance your CV but provide your mind and body with the much needed stimulus to help get you through the long dark days of applying for jobs.
Keep up with your hobbies. Everyone needs to relax, especially when they’re looking for a job. Hobbies need not be expensive either. Start a blog about your job hunt experience – you’d be surprised by how many followers you can attract and it helps to relieve some of the stress by releasing it out onto the internet. Make sure you do not neglect your friends and family. They can be an effective and strong support network that can mean the difference between failure and success.
Finally above all else, don’t give up!
